Dentist, Walk-In Clinic or Hospital? A 60-Second Check
Cooksville is home to Mississauga Hospital, and when a tooth hurts at 2 a.m. it's tempting to go straight to its emergency department. For a few dental problems, that's exactly right. For most, a hospital can ease the pain for a night but can't repair the tooth. You'll still need a dentist. Answer a few questions to see which applies to you.
What the hospital is for
Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, infection spreading into the face or neck, a broken jaw, heavy bleeding, or any head injury. Trillium Mississauga Hospital's emergency department at 100 Queensway West, right in Cooksville, is open 24 hours.
What the hospital usually can't do
Hospital emergency departments generally don't fill cavities, do root canals, re-cement crowns or repair broken teeth. You may leave with pain relief or antibiotics and a note to see a dentist. So if it's not a red-flag emergency, calling us first will save you a long wait.
What we do the same day when we can
Find the source of the pain, relieve it, and treat the tooth: draining an abscess, starting a root canal, repairing a break, re-cementing a crown, or removing a tooth that can't be saved.
What Will an Emergency Visit Cost with CDCP?
Many Cooksville families don't have workplace dental insurance, which is exactly who the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was built for. We accept CDCP, and emergency exams are among the covered services. How much the plan pays depends on your adjusted family net income. Choose your band:
New to Canada and not enrolled yet?
CDCP requires a Canadian tax return for the previous year, so people who've arrived recently often can't enrol right away. You can still be seen for an emergency: we'll explain fees up front, relieve the pain first, and help you plan any remaining treatment so you're not surprised. Once you've filed your first return, ask us about applying.
Getting to Us from Cooksville
🚌 MiWay Route 1. That's it. One bus, no transfer
Board Route 1 Dundas eastbound (toward Kipling) anywhere on Dundas Street near Hurontario and ride straight to our stop between Tomken and Dixie. If you're coming from the Cooksville GO area, walk down to Dundas and catch the same bus.
🚗 Driving
Take Dundas Street East past Cawthra and continue toward Tomken. We're at 918 Dundas St E, Suite 208. Hazel McCallion LRT construction is still slowing Hurontario, so use Dundas itself rather than cutting up and across.
🕘 Best times to call
Call when we open. 9:00 AM Tuesday and Friday, 1:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday, 8:00 AM Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 8:00 PM suit people who work days in the city.
Toothache at Night? Getting Through Until We Open
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever exactly as the label directs, provided it's safe with your other medications. Ask a pharmacist if you're unsure many Cooksville pharmacies stay open late.
- Don't put a pill directly on the gum. Aspirin placed against the tooth can burn the soft tissue.
- Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Avoid heat, which can make an infection swell.
- Sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow to reduce throbbing.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water and floss carefully around the sore tooth. Sometimes trapped food is part of the problem.
- Go to hospital instead if swelling spreads, you develop a fever, or breathing or swallowing becomes difficult.
Why Cooksville Patients Choose Us
💳Direct billing: pay only your share
We bill CDCP and most private plans directly. If CDCP covers you at 100%, you usually pay nothing at the visit beyond any difference we've already explained. No paying the full amount and waiting for reimbursement.
🍁A CDCP dentist who explains it clearly
Many of our patients are using CDCP for the first time. We'll check what's covered, request pre-approval when it's needed, and tell you any out-of-pocket cost before we start.
🔬Microscope dentistry: save the tooth when possible
Pulling a painful tooth is fast, but replacing it later costs far more. Magnification helps us find hidden cracks and extra canals, so more teeth can be saved with a root canal instead of removed.
🫧Guided Biofilm Therapy to stop the next emergency
Many toothaches start with gum problems and plaque that's been missed. Our GBT cleaning removes biofilm gently and thoroughly, making another emergency less likely.

Cooksville Emergency Dental FAQs
Should I go to Mississauga Hospital for a toothache?
Only if you have red-flag symptoms: swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever with facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a jaw or head injury. For toothaches without those signs, a dentist can treat the cause, the hospital generally can't repair teeth.
Does CDCP cover emergency dental visits?
Emergency exams are covered under CDCP, along with many treatments used in emergencies. The plan pays 100%, 60% or 40% of its set fees depending on your adjusted family net income. Some services need pre-approval, and you may owe the difference if a fee is higher than CDCP's. We explain any cost before treatment.
How long does it take to get from Cooksville to your office?
It's a straight trip east along Dundas Street. MiWay Route 1 runs from Cooksville to our stop with no transfer, and driving is a direct run along Dundas. Travel time depends on traffic and bus frequency. Check the MiWay or Transit app for live times.
I don't have dental insurance or CDCP yet. Can I still be seen?
Yes. We see uninsured patients for emergencies and give you full disclosure of fees before your appointment, so you can decide on treatment with the costs in front of you.
What should I bring to an emergency appointment?
Your CDCP member card or private insurance details if you have them, photo ID, a list of your medications and allergies, and any broken pieces of tooth or a crown that came off.
Do I have to pay the full amount and claim it back from CDCP?
No. We bill CDCP directly, as well as most private dental plans. You pay only your co-payment (if any) and any difference between our fee and the plan's, and we tell you that amount before treatment.
